Once known simply as the “Nostrano” of Ossola’s valleys, Ossolano has long been part of the daily life and culture of northern Piedmont. In 2017 it earned its European DOP status, becoming Italy’s 50th protected cheese — a recognition of its heritage and enduring quality.
Made in the Ossola Valley’s alpine pastures, this semi-hard cheese captures the very essence of its mountain terroir. Its flavors are rich yet balanced, with herbal and floral notes that recall the summer grazing lands. Traditionally enjoyed with polenta or melted into a silky fonduta, Ossolano is both a rustic staple and a refined expression of Italian cheesemaking tradition.
